UK prize competitions are legal when they include a genuine free entry route or require a real element of skill. That is the legal backbone of the whole sector, and it is also the first thing to check on any site you have not used before.
Second, look for a published ticket cap and a visible sold counter. Operators confident in their maths show you the numbers.
Third, check how draws are conducted. Live-streamed draws using a verifiable random number generator, with the winner named afterwards, are the standard. A winners page with dates, faces and prizes is a strong signal.
Fourth, look for DCMS voluntary code signatories. It is not regulation, but signing up commits an operator to clearer terms, responsible marketing and proper complaint handling.
Independent review scores are useful context but should never be the only check — volume of reviews matters as much as the average.
